Some people are born for music. Mozart was one such person, and the Cuban guitarist and composer Joaquin Clerch is another.
Harnoncourt described him as an "exceptionally talented musician".
And rightly so, because his guitar playing is of outstanding technical quality and also very poetic.
But Clerch can do more: he composes in a contemporary but personal style, with the natural musicality of a nightingale singing its song. His infectious and elegant music echoes elements of (late) Romantic, Cuban, Spanish and even Chinese music, among others.
Clerch is all about inspiration. The sensual music-making of the Camara de la Habana orchestra under the direction of Thomas Gabrisch and the expressive solo performance of flautist Anette Maiburg perfectly emulate this, making this CD - on which Clerch performs his own guitar concerto with captivating passion - a real recommendation.
Clerch makes it clear that truly soulful music can still be written in our digital age.
